De winnaar van de World Press Photo 2025 is een foto van de Palestijnse fotograaf Samar Abu Elouf uit Doha, gemaakt voor The New York Times, van een jongetje - Mahmoud Ajjour - dat ernstig gewond raakte toen hij vluchtte voor een Israëlische aanval in Gaza.

Samar Abu Elouf was evacuated from Gaza in December 2023. She now lives in the same apartment complex as Mahmoud in Doha, where she has documented the few badly wounded Gazans who, like Mahmoud, have made it out for treatment. Mahmoud Ajjour was severely injured while fleeing an Israeli attack in Gaza City in March 2024. After he turned back to urge his family onward, an explosion severed one of his arms and mutilated the other. The family were evacuated to Qatar where, after medical treatment, Mahmoud is learning to play games on his phone, write, and open doors with his feet.<br>
Mahmoud's dream is simple: he wants to get prosthetics and live his life as any other child. The war in Gaza has taken a disproportionate toll on children and the United Nations estimates that by December 2024, Gaza had the highest number of child amputees per capita anywhere in the world.

De World Press Photo Contest 2025 vindt plaats als onderdeel van de viering van het 70-jarig jubileum van World Press Photo. Een gelegenheid om de verhalen ook in een historisch perspectief te bekijken. De inmiddels gerenommeerde wedstrijd is de afgelopen jaren steeds internationaler geworden. Mede dankzij het regionale wedstrijdmodel. Dit jaar zijn 30 van de 42 winnaars ook afkomstig uit het land waar ze hun project(en) fotografeerden.

Beelden van protesten en opstanden in Kenia, Myanmar, Haïti, El Salvador en Georgië staan naast onverwachte portretten van politieke machthebbers in de Verenigde Staten en Duitsland. Daarnaast zijn er verschillende beelden die ons de wereld laten zien door de ogen van jongeren; een transgender persoon in Nederland, een Palestijns kind dat leert omgaan met een amputatie na ernstige verwonding in Gaza, een Oekraïens meisje getraumatiseerd door de oorlog en een jonge man op zijn trouwdag in Soedan. Ook andere onderwerpen als sport komen aan bod met onder meer een beeld van de Oegandese topatleet Tamale Safale, die ondanks zijn beperking (hij verloor zijn been tijdens een ongeluk) nog altijd meedoet aan wedstrijden waarin hij het opneemt tegen atleten die geen beperking hebben. Ook dit jaar worden beelden getoond die zijn vastgelegd tijdens verschillende conflicten in de wereld, zoals in Libanon en Palestina. Daarnaast wordt de relatie tussen mens en dier belicht, waaronder interacties met olifanten in Zambia en apen in Thailand. De impact van de klimaatcrisis anno 2024 wordt onder meer getoond in fotografie van rampen over de hele wereld; van Peru en Brazilië tot de Filipijnen. Belicht wordt ook een pride-viering op een geheime locatie in Lagos (Nigeria) waar leden van de LHBTIQA+-gemeenschap juridische vervolging riskeren.
